J. Layne Smith is a family man. He is a husband, father, son, brother, and uncle.
In college, he played a season of JV linebacker for the United States Air Force Academy.
He remains a college and professional football fan, and also enjoys following soccer,
lacrosse, basketball, and hockey. Layne is an avid reader on a wide range of subjects.
Layne is a proven leader in our community. He is a past President of the Capital Rotary
Club of Tallahassee, a former Rotarian of the Year, and a former District Secretary of Rotary.
Layne is the past President of the Maclay Lacrosse Booster Club, and he serves as the team’s
home game announcer. He founded the Tallahassee Lacrosse Club, and has served as one of its coaches.
Layne has been designated to serve as a Special Public Defender, and has provided free legal services
to persons charged with crimes.
Layne has been married to Cynthia Seymoe Smith for over 23 years, and they have two children. Their
son Chase is a second year student at The University of Florida, a member of the SAE fraternity,
and a starting attack man on the Gators’ men’s lacrosse team. Their daughter Callie is a freshman at
Chiles High School, a member of the Chiles’ orchestra, and she plays the violin and mandolin. The
Smiths’ share their home with their three dogs.
Layne’s father and mother are Frank and Janice Smith, and his sister is Terri Head. Cindy’s mother is
Bunny Seymoe Smith, and her sister is Cathy Seymoe Billings.
